As a 501(c)(3), our unique social enterprise business model helps cover the administrative expenses for the organization, so donations go toward our program expenses. Our thrift stores make it possible for 100% of St. Matthew's House donations to fund our life-saving programs. The new shelter will serve single women, senior women and women with children experiencing homelessness. St. Matthew’s House also is expanding services at the Food and Emergency Assistance Warehouse  by adding a Community Services Center to provide assistance with other issues that food pantry clients may be facing.

"We're in our 35th year, and we really started with the need to serve the homeless and serve people who are hungry," Brooder said. "Our mission is just growing over all the years to continue to serve hunger, homelessness [and] addiction." St. Matthew's House is committed to assisting those who are suffering from a drug or alcohol addiction.

The new location expects to house upwards of 300 women and children per year, as the local Hunger and Homeless Coalition expressed a desperate need for this facility. According to the Lee County Homeless Coalition's 2023 census, last year, 118 children were homeless, out of which 40 were unsheltered. The number has climbed since 2021, when 76 children were documented homeless in the county — 20 of them unsheltered, the data shows. However, on May 6, we are transitioning from multi-location food distributions to a National Best Practice model for food pantries endorsed by Feeding America. This Best Practice model is being adopted by food pantries across the country. We went from serving 300 families a month to serving over 4,000 families in April of 2020 and the numbers kept climbing.

Customers in our stores, residents in our programs, volunteers, staff, and anyone else should see the goodness of God’s blessings in all that we do. We work to provide healing words, resources, and structure to all who come to us. The homeless, addicted, mentally ill, and people wounded by life’s circumstances need the opportunity to find healing.

St. Matthew’s House food distributions will continue to some of the area’s more distant locations of LaBelle, Immokalee and the Golden Gate Senior Center. Also, in the event of a local emergency, we are prepared to pivot back to drive-through distributions. When Hurricane Ian hit in 2022, St. Matthew’s House responded to these extreme circumstances with a massive response. This was made possible with the help of our food bank partners, community food drives, individual donors, the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation, Community Foundation, church partners and hundreds of volunteers. Give your in-kind gifts (furniture, appliances, clothing, etc.) so that your used items can impact the lives of the less fortunate.

The 8,000-square-foot facility will have 11 private dorms for residents and 28 beds for single women. St. Matthew's House began in 1987 when a group of Naples parishioners followed a calling to bring food to a homeless population living in a nearby wooded area. The data mirrors similar increases in homeless women and men during the same time frame.

Contribute to the mission with monetary support, in-kind goods, or food donations. Property owners can apply for the exemptions on the PVA’s website, jeffersonpva.ky.gov. There’s both an online form and a printable form on the “Forms & Tools” section of the website. Area Social Security offices and local government centers should have the form, as well. This figure gets subtracted from a property’s assessed value, lessening the amount taxed. That translates to $533-$630 in savings, depending on which taxing jurisdiction a person lives in.

Naples-based residential and commercial contracting company PBS Contractors has been renovating the building for the new shelter. He added Lee County offers a family shelter and a man's shelter, but there had been no facility that focused exclusively on women and children. We will continue working with our many wonderful partners and volunteers to keep our 10,000-square-foot warehouse stocked and ready to serve those needing assistance.

St. Matthew’s continues its tradition of inspiring a love of learning at every grade and teaching children how to self advocate through our model of service leadership to help each child flourish to their true potential. The overall goal at the shelter is to help residents develop a foundation for a new lifestyle and provide them with a positive environment to make that change. Our program offers compassionate, disciplined counseling and guidance to each resident’s physical, emotional, and spiritual challenges. At St. Matthew’s Parish School, our students flourish in both mind and in heart. They each find and build on their unique set of strengths and talents, and dedicate them not only to their own enrichment, but to the service of others, of their communities, and of the planet. As an Episcopal school grounded in the values of inclusion, our community welcomes families of all faiths and cultures.

St. Matthew’s House has been making great strides in its new women and children homeless shelter. "Many women that were on their own ... Single women, senior women, moms or kids were struggling to make ends meet," Brooder said. "And that just forced a lot of people, especially women into homelessness." Brooder said they've been involved in Lee County for quite a while with thrift stores and women's recovery campuses.

The mission of St. Matthew’s House has been to help those who, through circumstances in their lives, need a hand up. Brooder said the Lee County Homeless Coalition recently reported at least 165 women live in their cars. As for when the new center opens to the public, Brooder said he expects it will quickly accommodate many women and children in need. The 8,000-square-foot facility in Fort Myers will provide 11 private dorms for women with children and 28 beds for single women.
